What Youll Get to Do
The Vice-President of Cargo is responsible for overseeing and leading all aspects of the Cargo operation to actively contribute to the development, execution, and realization of Calm Air’s market position and continual growth strategy. Cargo is an essential need for our customer base and is therefore a significant part of operations at Calm Air, including the movement of over 25 million pounds annually, having freighter aircraft being over 25 of the aircraft fleet, and managing a headcount that is ~25 of the workforce. This executive position will be part of the company’s leadership team and responsible for building strong, professional relationships with employees and customers, work closely alongside Sales and Marketing functions to achieve new sales objectives, and have a proven record of strategic thinking, analytical skills and exceptional problem-solving ability. They will work closely with the executive team and other departments to ensure the Cargo department works efficiently, effectively and as a cohesive unit to support Company initiatives.

Operations:

  • Responsible to provide strategic planning, development, and improvements for the Cargo operation
  • Responsible to manage an inventory tracking system
  • Lead the renewal of various contract negotiations
  • Lead all pricing negotiations and contract management efforts
  • Approach and seek out potential customers to establish relationships to generate new business and revenue opportunities
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with existing clients to boost our brand and enhance profits long-term
  • Know the competition and market trends, and develop strategies to allow Calm Air to remain an industry leader
  • Analyze data and market trends to identify business opportunities and make informed decisions
  • Liaison with the Director of Cargo to manage freighter utilization and daily inventory
  • Ensure the Director of Cargo and Cargo leadership team effectively plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective storage and delivery of goods to meet customer requirements
  • Establish and evaluate measurable key performance indicators and standards for all areas of the Cargo operation to ensure accountability to performance and service level agreements
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory authorities as well as internal policies and procedures
  • Developing, maintaining, and controlling the Company Cargo Policy Manual, along with any other publications incorporated by reference
  • Responsible for developing and implementing Cargo policies and systems to support organizational strategy to grow our Cargo business
  • Coach management teams on employee/labour relations, customer requests, employee, and union inquiries
  • Other duties as assigned

Financial:

  • Prepare annual departmental budgets
  • In conjunction with the Executive team, develop annual strategic plans, operating plans, forecasts, budgets, and capital expenditures
  • Monitor and analyze monthly expenditures to assigned GL accounts, explain variances from budget or forecast, and manage revenues and costs to increase profitability
  • Manage overtime for Cargo staff and monitor overtime reports
  • Adhere to all financial internal controls
  • Monitor department headcount to ensure within budget and seek approval for replacement or any requested increases
  • Ensure the Cargo team collects outstanding receivables for all Cargo related accounts
  • Engage in ongoing cost reduction analysis within the Cargo department as part of the overall focus around improving profitability

Safety:

  • Ensuring any findings resulting from Quality Assurance or the Safety Management System (SMS) is addressed as per Calm Air policies and procedures
  • Actively support the SMS by following processes and encouraging a safety reporting culture in your department
  • Promote occupational health and safety within your department
  • Participate in the development and monitoring of safety training
  • Proactively communicate hazards and SMS initiatives within your department

Senior Management (Department Head) – have been delegated the authority and are responsible to the Accountable Executive for developing and maintaining the SMS (Safety Management System) Program within their departments, this includes receiving reports and communicating freely to and with all personnel within their respective department and other departments as required to maintain effective day to day activities. Ensure regulatory and company standard processes and procedures are developed and maintained (Quality Assurance activities). Ensure all hazards and deficiencies are managed to remove or reduce risk to as low as reasonably possible. Providing resources as necessary or inform the Accountable Executive when they are required (e.g., human, financial, training, tools, proper protective equipment).

Leadership:

  • Change management leader – execute change while supporting employees through communication, listening and actioning
  • Lead and inspire employees, provide mentorship, and oversee the professional development of the Cargo team
  • Create and maintain a positive company culture that supports employee participation and working with other departments
  • Build strong, professional relationships with team members and customers by promoting a healthy and fair working environment
  • Embark on employment equity initiatives, engaging with all employees to promote employment equity and encouraging employees to undertake the self-declaration survey updating, as necessary
  • All levels of the organization share responsibility for human rights within the organization, overseeing and promoting continuous improvement on human rights and employment equity initiatives

Skills & Experience We Value

  • Post-secondary education in business, transportation, or logistics required
  • 5 years’ experience in a senior leadership role within transportation, warehousing or logistics required
  • Experience in sales or customer service is required with the ability to seek out new business relationships and maintain existing ones
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with a thorough understanding of different cultures, traditions, practices, and beliefs as it affects doing successful business in Calm Air’s various locations
  • Proficient with computers (MS Office)
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate with all levels of employees and customers
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and negotiation skills
  • Ability to develop a departmental budget and having a financial acumen
  • Excellent analytical skills using financial and non-financial information to make operational and strategic decisions
  • Previous experience in a unionized environment is an asset
  • Northern experience considered an asset
  • Travel is required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required Enhanced Security Clearances
  • Inuktitut language considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to Inuit Land Claims Beneficiaries
