Overview

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a key enabling technology for the next generation of aerospace components, delivering improved performance and environmental sustainability.

The Client is advancing its capability in Laser Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing (LPBF) to meet stringent aerospace standards. The Additive Manufacturing team, based at the UK Global Technology Centre, works closely with specialists across multiple disciplines and global project partners to industrialise this technology.

The Laser Powder Bed Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining LPBF equipment used in the production of 3D printed components. The role ensures efficient machine setup, calibration, and operation while closely monitoring build quality, material consistency, and equipment performance. The technician also supports post-processing activities and maintains high standards of safety, cleanliness, and compliance within the workspace.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Operation & Setup

  • Set up and operate Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) systems, including loading metal or polymer powders and ensuring correct material handling and storage.
  • Prepare, calibrate, and configure machines to achieve optimal print parameters, ensuring quality and production efficiency.
  • Monitor and adjust machine settings during builds, including laser power, scan speed, and powder layer thickness.

Quality Control & Monitoring

  • Continuously monitor build processes, identifying and resolving issues such as defects, machine malfunctions, or process deviations.
  • Conduct visual inspections and non-destructive testing to verify part quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Ensure all components meet required technical specifications and tolerances.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform routine maintenance including cleaning, software updates, and hardware inspections.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues such as print failures, system errors, and mechanical faults.
  • Document machine issues and collaborate with engineering teams to implement corrective actions.

Post-Processing & Finishing

  • Remove components from build platforms and complete post-processing operations such as powder removal, heat treatment, and surface finishing.
  • Ensure all parts are prepared in line with project or client specifications for onward processing or delivery.

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures relating to LPBF operations and hazardous material handling.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment, including appropriate disposal of waste materials.
  • Participate in safety training and actively promote safe working practices.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Record operational data including machine parameters, defects, and performance metrics.
  • Produce reports covering production runs, maintenance activity, and quality outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate logs for calibration, maintenance, and material inventory.

Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with engineering and design teams to optimise build parameters, reduce material waste, and improve part quality.

Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot complex systems.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Basic understanding of metallurgy and material properties relevant to additive manufacturing.
  • Awareness of safety protocols, including hazardous material handling and laser safety.
  • Hands-on manufacturing or component/process development experience.

Desirable

  • Craft apprenticeship, ONC/HNC, or equivalent technical qualification.

Additional Requirements

Travel

  • Occasional travel may be required, managed in a reasonable and agreed manner.

Physical Requirements

  • Full-time position.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment operating complex machinery.
  • Capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting moderate weights, in a safe and controlled manner.
