Position Summary
Parker Lord Elastomer Process Materials Product Development team in Erie, PA is looking for Chemical Technologist . The product development team of scientists, engineers, and technologists is focused on launching new polymeric products (adhesives, primers, coatings) into the elastomer bonding automotive and industrial spanets. The primary job of the incumbent will be to provide hands-on technical laboratory and operational support on multiple R&D projects including lab work, experiment planning, running equipment, possible synthetic chemistry work, and writing brief experimental summaries . The incumbent must be a highly motivated, self-starter with excellent communication and time management skills, and high attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Consistently perform routine laboratory assignments of moderate complexity under minimal supervision.
- Perform activities that provide general support and maintenance to the department, company, or technology.
- Safely handle hazardous chemicals, including but not limited to isocyanate, amine, and solvent based materials.
- Make adaptations and modification of experimental procedures where needed, including suggestions regarding formulations, samples, methods, equipment, etc.
- Readily communicate and collaborate with team members in a fast-paced environment to accomplish project goals.
- Responsible for insuring a high level of safety, quality, and timeliness of results on tasks.
- A strong adherence to the company ethics policies, safety policies, and quality standards.
- Ability to gain trust and confidence of all internal and external customers through quality and responsive service.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Lead Scientists: Meet regularly to discuss assignments, progress, and project requirements.
- Safety Compliance: Review Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for each task.
- Adhesive Formulation:
- Weigh chemical materials accurately using a balance.
- Operate mixers, shakers, or rollers to create adhesive formulations.
- Application of Adhesives: Use a spray gun to apply adhesives as required.
- Equipment Operation:
- Operate ovens for curing or drying processes.
- Use a rubber injection press for molding applications.
- Testing and Measurement: Operate testing equipment, including Instron machines, to evaluate material properties.
- Data Recording: Accurately record measurements and report information in Excel spreadsheets.
- Workplace Maintenance: Maintain a clean and safe working environment to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Team Collaboration: Work effectively with colleagues to achieve common goals and project objectives.
Qualifications
Required
- Exemplifies strong work ethic.
- Hands on experience in a chemical laboratory or with mechanical equipment.
- Comfortable collaborating within a cross-functional team on a daily basis. Communicating frequently via written and verbal reports.
- Ability to lift, carry, and pour from containers weighing up to forty pounds. Adequate visual acuity to read chemical container labels.
- Demonstrates good planning and organizational skills.
- Capable of independently working with computerized equipment.
Work Experience and Education
Required
- 5+ years of relevant work experience OR Associates degree in related discipline and 3 years of relevant work experience OR Bachelor’s degree in related discipline and 1 year of relevant work experience
Preferred
- Experience working in a chemical lab or mechanical shop.
- Experience with applying adhesives or coatings.
- Experience with supportive functions such as metal preparation; rubber or plastic processing; adhesive/coating application and molding equipment.
