Job Summary:
This position is needed to lead, and expand the capabilities of the Bal Seal Engineering (BSE) Machine Shop. Qualified candidates will provide direction to the Machine Shop team, schedule the Machine Shop workload, and set priorities.
This position requires a “Hands On” approach that will involve actively managing projects, maintaining 6S in the Machine Shop, and may include specification of new equipment or upgrades, training personnel, programming and running machinery as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interpretation of engineering drawings per ASME Y14.5
- Develop and expand machine shop capabilities
- Review submitted drawings for manufacturability and shop capabilities
- Order materials and tooling to support work requests
- Contribute to project planning activities
- May be required to assist in sourcing and commissioning of new machine shop equipment
- Establishing standard work processes and procedures
- Establish and manage inventory of spare parts for equipment
- Documentation of legacy production equipment and “tribal knowledge” processes
- Create and implement a mentorship plan to develop personnel
- Identify, lead, and support Continuous Improvement Initiatives
- Resource planning
- Ability and aptitude to train or cross-train other Machinists and/or technicians
- Participate in all required training sessions
- Complete all required data entry and paperwork in an accurate and timely manner
- May need to troubleshoot issues related to manufacturing operations and implement repairs as needed
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Education:
- High School Diploma and/or equivalent training institution Certification
- Demonstrated leadership experience/capability and a minimum of 5 years experience in a similar technical environment
Experience:
· Experience leading high performance teams· Experience with scheduling· Experience interfacing with ERP/MRP and PLM/PDM Systems preferred· Experience working with suppliers to spec. equipment/upgrades preferred· Minimum 5 years CAD experience (SolidWorks and Inventor)- Experience with machining small and medium sized precision components made from a variety of polymers and metals.
- Experience with welding and laser spaning processes and techniques a plus
- Experience implementing Continuous Improvement, Lean initiatives, developing and implementing Process Capability studies
- Overseeing and approving DFMA reviews and approval of engineering drawings (specifically tools, jigs & fixtures)
- Design holding fixtures as required for part fabrication
- Experienced Esprit programmer, competent at CNC machine set-up across a variety of machines
- Strong computer and analytical skills required
- Minimum 5 experience operating CNC and manual Machines
- Base knowledge of machining tolerances and process capabilities
- Experience reading and using basic inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, height gage, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency in conflict resolution
- Must be hands on and interface with plant personnel and operators
- Experience utilizing ERP and/or other task/supply driven systems preferred
- Competent with Microsoft Office suite
- Proficient in setup and operation of 3-axis CNC Mill and/or lathe
- Proficient in setup and operation of manual mill, lathe or other equipment
- Strong Mechanical Aptitude
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
- Dependable
- Ability to take initiative
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to adjust to changing priorities
- Proficiency in the interpretation of GD&T on engineering drawings per ASME Y14.5
- Base knowledge of machine elements (i.e. fasteners, bearings, gear and belt drive systems)
- Base knowledge of metallurgy (i.e. material strength, hardness, machinability, heat treatment processes)
- Proficiency in machining tolerances and process capabilities
- Proficiency in the inspection tools and methods
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to work in a highly collaborative environment
- Ability to identify and solve problems with little direction or assistance
- Proficient mathematical skills including geometry and math conversions
- Ability to and effectively and safely utilize various hand and power tools
Physical Requirements:
- Employee is occasionally required to stand
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk throughout the facility
- Occasionally will need to bend, stoop and squat
- Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
- Required to reach with hands and arms to handle documents and products
- Must be able to enter data into a computer by use of a key board and mouse and be able to sit for long periods at his/her desk as well as occasionally visit employees throughout the building to gather data and clarify information

- The work environment conditions are typical of a manufacturing environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the basic functions. The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to moderate, however, hearing protection may be required if employee enters high noise areas as a part of their normal job duties.
