Summary:

Reporting to the Full-Time Supply/Logistics Supervisor, the Senior Supply Technician is responsible for supervising and guiding the work of Supply Technicians and Apprentices, including overseeing shifts or coordinating multiple workgroups to ensure smooth operations. This role involves providing valuable input on performance appraisals and professional development for team members. The Senior Supply Technician is accountable for the efficient and accurate management of National Science Foundation (NSF) materials, ensuring proper inventory control and distribution. Additionally, the position plays a key role in the development and implementation of team goals, collaborating to ensure the timely and organized handling of materials to meet operational needs. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities are essential in this dynamic role. During the winter season, the Senior Supply Technician will also support aircraft operations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • 30 Managing Process: Ensures operational procedures are effectively followed, identifying and recommending process improvements to Supply Department Management. Evaluates workflows to eliminate inefficiencies. Oversees the receipt, storage, issuance, and return of materials, including operating forklifts as needed. Utilizes the ERP database to monitor stock levels and research locations. Maintains a safe workplace, prioritizing safety and adhering to Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH), Waste Management, and Quality Assurance standards while fostering a culture of safety.
  • 30 Coaching and Developing Associates: Guides associates in daily operations to ensure high productivity, safety, and quality. Trains and coaches supply technicians on ERP systems, customer service, inventory management, and vessel operations. Provides performance feedback, resolves staff and customer issues, and investigates operational errors, recommending corrective actions as needed.
  • 30 Drives Results: Ensures inventory accuracy and control by analyzing reports to improve key metrics such as retrograde, quality, and expenses. Prepares audit-related reports, manages material shipments, and processes inventory transactions to maintain accurate records. Physically handles materials as needed, including forklift operations.
  • 10 Business Planning: Collaborates with the functional area to coordinate and monitor materials, ensuring accurate purchasing and minimizing irregularities. Performs physical inventories and maintains detailed inventory stock level records to support informed operational purchasing decisions.
  • Cross-trains with other departments within Transportation and Logistics, including operation of heavy equipment and oversized tundra vehicles.
  • Trains in vessel offload procedures and processes. May be assigned to various roles or shifts in a 24-hr period during vessel offload or other special operations while deployed.
  • Completes annual training in light vehicle operation, forklift use, and inventory management systems during deployment.
  • Assists with runway operations during seasonal transitions and ongoing winter flights.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supply department management, including outdoor work in varying temperatures.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • Associate degree plus one year of equivalent experience in inventory materials management, warehousing, purchasing, cargo/transportation, supply chain, or logistics, including the use of forklifts, hand trucks, or other powered and non-powered lifting devices.
  • Alternatively, a high School diploma or GED with a minimum of three years’ experience in inventory materials management, warehousing, purchasing, cargo/transportation, supply chain, or logistics, including the use of forklifts, hand trucks, or other powered and non-powered lifting devices will be accepted in in lieu of a degree.
  • Alternatively, a minimum of two seasons of experience working in the Transportation and Logistics (T&L) department or related areas in Antarctica will be accepted in in lieu of a degree.
  • A minimum of one year of experience must be in a supervisory role, or a minimum of two seasons of experience working in the Transportation and Logistics (T&L) department or related areas in Antarctica.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Microsoft Office Suite Proficiency: Intermediate skills, particularly in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Operations Systems: Proficient in navigating and operating ERP systems to perform material research, data input, and corrections, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in daily operations.

  • Conflict Management: Views conflict as an opportunity to find common ground and gain cooperation from all parties, actively listening and reading situations quickly to resolve disputes equitably.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Familiarity and capability to identify commodities within specific functional or trades group areas, including Medical/Dental, Construction/Residential Repair, Automotive/Heavy & Industrial Equipment, Science/Lab Support, Food/Beverage/Retail, Office/Hotel/Janitorial Supplies; Electrical/Plumbing/Utilities/Carpentry/Fire Safety; Information Technology/Communications Supplies.
  • Working knowledge of materials movement, purchasing, inventory management, and hazardous materials.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • IBM Maximo experience.
  • Previous deployment to Antarctica.
  • Experience with remote site logistics is highly desirable; experience with polar logistics operations is preferred.

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica.
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer.
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF.
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
