Serves as an Engineering Technician within the FAA Logistics Center, Products Services Group (AJW-L500).

Duties

Performs basic, progressively more difficult technical work associated with installing, repairing, fabricating, maintaining, or modifying complex systems for the FAA, Customs and Border Protections (CBP) or other government agencies. Acquires and applies basic technical knowledge and limited experience to accomplish assignments. Receives instruction in engineering, Federal Aviation Regulations, and shop practices.

Possess a basic technical knowledge of mechanical and/or basic electronic concepts and theories to perform basic assignments associated with inspecting, troubleshooting, analyzing, repairing, overhauling, and installing equipment related to FAA, Department of Defense (DOD), and other government agencies. Systems include free standing towers, guyed towers, equipment shelters and other unmanned structures and facilities.

Assists other employees during early developmental stages. As employee progresses in training and gains experience, he or she independently completes assignments of limited difficulty. During early developmental stages, contacts are primarily internal to the immediate work unit. As training progresses, contacts are expanded to include representatives of external organizations. In both cases, contacts are made to furnish technical guidance and advice, share information, provide data, and discuss the statuses of assignments, and coordinate the activities of contractors.

Works with new and existing technology and interacts team leads, crew leads or engineers to obtain the skills necessary to install, integrate, maintain, and restore complicated systems. Serves as a member of a team responsible for performing maintenance activities, accomplish assigned tasks or projects to maintain system readiness. Communicate and work effectively in a team environment, collaborate internally with team to meet mission requirements. Exercise sound judgment, integrity, act in an ethical manner consistent with FAA code of conduct, adhere to FAA policies, and report any safety or personnel issues to management immediately.

Regularly refers problems and questions to a supervisor, team leader, or more experienced technician. Works with increasing independence as development progresses. Supervisors, team leaders, or more experienced technicians define objectives, resources, and deadlines.

Established manuals, procedures, and publications provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments. Supervisors, team leaders, or more experienced technicians furnish instructions for completing detailed assignments. Technical manuals, manufacturers’ instructions, FAA procedures, and other publications provide guidance for most assignments. Utilize schematics, wiring diagrams, and blueprints to troubleshoot and repair systems. Supervisors, team leaders, or crew leads are available to provide guidance, on the job training, and mentorship. Work is reviewed carefully and frequently while in progress and at completion for quality and timeliness.

Assists team in planning, organizing, and project review to accomplish tasks and maintain a focus on organizational objectives. Accomplishes training related to technician development for assigned systems.

May be required to travel for the purpose of obtaining and/or providing technical information for resolving various operational problems and corrective maintenance issues. May be required to allocate resources to and participate in a call-out roster in support of FAA or other government agencies, such as CBP, to support field priority requirements.

Qualifications

To qualify for this FV-F position, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to (FG/GS-4) level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE includes: experience analyzing, modifying, repairing, and testing complex types of mechanical components and equipment; applying knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering technician work, i.e., maintaining and using a variety of test equipment; and/or interpreting diagrams; working with hand tools, to include basic power tools, and how to operate them safely; operating in a team environment working towards a common goal; receiving general work instructions or tasks to complete work on time and within budget.

OR

Education: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics gained from an accredited college or university.
